Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
