Three Lions Coach Explains His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Now, he's dedicated to assist Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer commenced as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his destiny.

Metoric Climb

His advancement is incredible. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a standing through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams included top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Toiling around the clock all the time, they both challenge limits. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and avoids language like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not only to stay ahead of changes and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We get 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, pressing from the front. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

His desire for development is all-consuming. While training for his pro license, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered difficult settings imaginable to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

Barry graduated as the best in his year, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Frank was one of those convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that Chelsea removed most of his staff except Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on in the setup. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body consider them a duo akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
