The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's amazing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
