The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as pardoning festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
