The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company Unilever stopped the launch for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, disclosed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor as part of a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
This latest development deepens the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning worries that its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
