Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Criticism

Personalities from both sides of the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures

The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

This is a appalling and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

Some GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his party to defend the statements.

The Director's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.

"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of a different individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
