Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks proceed
Citizens have gathered across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the discussions said that an late session of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the morning session finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war management of the area
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages return none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that around 70% of the population desire the war to end in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.
From there, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the western district, sector and zone districts and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening comes, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city said another two fatalities had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south region, medical staff said.
