Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
