We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
