Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
